Hi Lou,

ink will hold a charge, but it'll depend on the ink components as how much
charge and the rate of dissipation. I was involved in developing a
conductive scratch card ink to stop (innovative) people charging up the
cards and reading off the winners, but these inks were being charged through
a cathodic charging unit.

Anyway black inks tend to be either carbon black or iron oxide based or both
and are conductive, the problems tend to lie with the organic based colours.
I can't imagine they'd cause an issue if your all strapped up. If it really
was a problem I'm fairly sure you'd be able to source a conductive spray to
go over the labels, that's all that would be required, something to give
slow dissipation of any charge - but labels????

Best regards,

Subject: [TN] Labeling of bottles in statis safe area

TechNetters, our technicians in the manufacturing area have been struggling
to keep bottles of process chemicals labeled. The bottles themselves are
static-safe, I understand. The sales manager of the bottle company has
advised us that our labels need to be "conductive", and that the ink itself
will hold a charge if it is not "antistatic". How concerned do we need to
be about the labels and ink on such bottles? I'd like to give our techs a
scientific, technet-style answer. We have wrist straps, along with
dissipative floor and coats. As always, thanks for any comments. Lou Hart
