Hi Frank,
Colin Lea has shown that HASL-thicknesses of less than 2 microns [=80
micro-inches] have limited shelf lives--getting worse the thinner you go.
Unless you do not need shelf life, I would stick with 100 to 500 microinches.
There is nothing wrong per se with 1000 microinches, except of course, that
the thicker the HASL the less flat the surface.
