I stopped cleaning 340, a former life, using a vapor cleaner. The cleaner
could remove the grease from under the components. Not only did it remove
the grease, the grease made its way into the rinse sump. The filters did not
remove the zinc oxide particles, as they were very small. So we got white
residue when the rinse sump levels were too high. I don't know if the
silicone was deposited on the boards as we did not conformal coat, but its a
distinct possibility.

In an open loop water cleaning process might not be a problem. In a closed
loop system I would anticipate problems.

Subject: [TN] Thermal Grease

Good morning all,

A quick question, I hope. Does anyone have experiences they want to share
regarding the cleaning of assemblies that contain thermal greases? We use
a Dow Corning DC340 thermal conductive grease to aid in heat transferrance.
There is currently a debate ongoing (culminating with a Friday meeting) as
to the advisability of exposing such material to our Aquanox SSA cleaning
regimen.

Part of me is concerned about the SSA attacking the silicone and
redistributing it everywhere. But, one of the manufacturing centers has
indicated that they have been putting this grease through this cleaning
process for several years with no apparent problems.

Any thoughts on the matter?
