There is some evidence that suggests white tin is not as robust a finish as
reflowed tin-lead.

Remember the primary purpose of the finish is to protect the copper so we
can solder to it. HASL (solder) pads are well protected but can present
problems because they are not flat. If that is why you want to experiment
sure, consider white tin but there other finishes to consider as well.
Organic Solder Protectant (OSP), immersion silver, gold over nickel.

OSP works pretty good but presents inspectors with challenges because the
connections look different. In addition OSP is not plating, so you don't
know if the copper can be plated until you try to solder to it. That can be
a little late.

Of the group gold is different because you are soldering to nickel not
copper. So, it is not the same process, wets slower and the forces are not
as strong.

Immersion silver seems to be a pretty good finish. IMHO, I like it better
than immersion tin.

Subject: [TN] White Tin

Dear Net member,

Ever heard of white tin finish used in place of HASL?
I heard it's pretty good and there's no lead.
Opinions? Wanna test it?

Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Richard
