Rick,
I presume you mean "... apart from the lead-in attrition" (lead in length
divided by component packaging pitch), in which case it depends on the
quality of the taping. Very occasionally I have had reels where the (0603)
components' retaining tape has been poorly attached. I have lost two or
three components at a time in odd patches throughout a reel, causing skips
in the component placement (old placing machine). It's not been a regular
feature, though.
Try finding out who tapes your components and have a word with them if
you're incurring more than occasional losses.

making necklaces...hehehe. So my question, what is the typical loss/fallout
of smt components, on reel, does one see?
