Hi Jim,

I even saw solder balls on top of large ICs. They were actualy the result of
outgassing from the vias, so they were coming from the PCB manufacturer.

Check if the vias under the chips are covered with solder mask. Our issue
was terminated when changing the glossy solder mask with a matte one.
