Dear Gwenna,

The European Parliament and the Council have recommended different dates
for the lead phase-out so both are correct. In practice, 2007 should be
seen as the latest date by which the lead ban will be introduced, with
2006 still very possible.

The various documents can be seen on this page of the Soldertec website;
http://www.lead-free.org/legislation/detail/ec-weee-current-status.html#
2006

The text is copied below but go to the website to link to the reports
and other documents...

The European Parliament voted on 15 May 2001 to adopt proposals to amend
the date for the hazardous material ban in the draft WEEE/ROHS
Directives to 2006. A brief report is available here. Official
amendments document is here - to be read in conjuction with the June
2000 document above.

The Council of Ministers from each European state government discussed
the proposals on 7 June 2001. Their opinion, which will be published as
a Common Position, aligns with the Parliament proposals in setting a
target date of January 2007 for a ban on hazardous materials including
lead.

This opinion of the Council will be discussed and voted on by the
European Parliament in the next few months. Council and Parliament must
agree before the Directives can be finalised. Further changes are
possible before the Directives are passed, possibly sometime around the
beginning of 2002.

The list of hazardous materials is due to be reviewed in 2003 with the
possibility of extending the ban to e.g. PVC other halogenated flame
retardants etc.

Kay
