Herr Winterer

Perhaps you may be aware that the IPC, EIA, and EPA are launching a $650,000
initiative to study life cycles of all solder alloys. So really the jury is
still out on lead-free until we better know the environmental hazards of the
alternatives that use silver, copper, etc..

You probably also know that many organotins are very toxic.

You also probably know that lead-free solders require much higher melting
temperatures, leading to higher energy usage and more CO2 release by power
plants.

So I believe that when the Board of Infineon also recognizes these facts,
they will recognize that recycling is the answer, not banning lead in solder.

Don't you agree?

By the way, the IPC would like to have Infineon's participation in the study.
Please contact David Bergman or Fern Abrams of the IPC. That would really
qualify Infineon as a good environmental citizen.
