We tried to do some original analysis on this and it just got out of hand.
We found several factors lead to shrinkage: (material comes with leaders or
do you need to peel off section to thread feeders?),machines properly
maintained?, are your operators consciencious about picking up/saving and
hand placing dropped parts? are you cutting reels to accommodate multiple
lines?, Are operators using the final strips off of a reel that has been
returned to the stockroom or do they magically disappear in the process?,
does your NCMR (NON-conforming rejects get counted and reported to materials
control?, etc.
To make it less of a headache, we decided to use a percentage of
shrinkage across the board based on component types:
SMD caps and resistors, hardware screws and nuts,smd xsisters, diodes = 3%
shrinkage.
CONNECTORS, smd I.C.s and programmables, xtals, fuses, regulators, and
switches= 1%
Doing turnkey procurement, planning for the shrinkage is a godsend.
Most customers who do outsourceing with consigned material (their own) get
an idea of a shrinkage factor after about a dozen phone calls each time you
run the job. ("well I sent you 100 pcs and you're only building 100 units,
Where did it go???)
Save the headache and make it simple. Hope it helps.
