Julien,
I've been monitoring the wave using the Wave Solder Optimizer (very similar
to the WaveRider).
I monitor (once per shift) immersion depth, parallelism, dwell time,
conveyor speed, and preheat using individual measurements SPC charts.
For immersion depth, my target is .048", with UCL at .060" and LCL at .036"
(the Optimizer measures in .012" increments, so I allow for one increment
variation).
For the rest of the process parameters, the control limits (three std.
dev.) are set by historical data (fifty readings). Here are the other
control limits: parallelism and dwell time +/- .3 seconds, speed +/- .2
ft/min, and preheat +/- 5 degrees F.
Also, I have one 18" section on fingers that I run the Optimizer on in lieu
of placing the unit on any part of the conveyor. This eliminates the
conveyor fingers as the cause for out of control conditions in the depth,
length, or parallelism. My rational is that I'm trying to monitor the wave
solder pot, not the conveyor fingers (yeah, I know that my boards run on
all of the conveyor, but it's easier to monitor the solder pot without the
conveyor finger "noise" factor).

Good luck

Subject: [TN] WaveRider results on solder wave

Hi everybody,
We start using a waverider for monitoring two wave soldering
machine. We
have made some pretest run during one month. Our main concern is about the
parallelism and the immersion depth of the solder. The parallelism is
between -0.2 sec et 0.4 sec ( main wave ) and the immersion depth is
between
1.47 mm and 1.93 mm. Our main question is about the variation we see not
the
absolute value. We have a standards deviation of 0.2 sec for the
parallelism
and 0.12 mm for the immersion depth. Since we have no real point of
comparaison, we are unable to say if this it's ok or too much. We want to
know if other person use the waverider and which variation do you read from
the immersion depth and the parallism of the wave solder. Thank you.
