We have been running FR4 through hole boards in Shell Diala AX oil for over
twenty years. (Is FR4 that old? In the early days it may have been G10.)
The only issues we have seen in our application (high voltage) are moisture
and air in the oil which can cause electrical breakdown. As for materials
used in the oil, the Polyolefin heat shrink gets gooie with extend exposure
and RTV gets really messy if submerged in oil before it is fully cured. If
these is an expansion gland (bladder or diaphragm) it is best to use Nitrile
as ozone will attack other materials.

As our voltage levels increase we are looking into baking the boards in an
oven just prior to submersion in oil to remove any moisture that may have
been absorbed by any of the components or the substrate.

Subject: [TN] Circuit boards in oil

This is my first time on this message board.

I am looking for information on circuit boards operating in oil. The
application would be a flex/rigid board with SMT components on it operating
in a hydraulic pump. I am wondering if there is any experience on the
affects of the oil on the components, solder and the board.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you,

John
