Dear IPC Designers Council List members:

As the Conference Chair for the PCB Design Conferences, I wanted to remind you
that you can take the IPC Designer Council Certification classes and exam at PCB
Design Conference East 2001, PLUS you also can attend PCB East courses and
exhibits thanks to a special conference package offered in cooperation with the
IPC Designers Council certification program. PCB East 2001 is only 7 weeks away.
Act quickly on this one, so you'll receive your IPC study materials prior to the
start of the show.

If you haven't yet checked out PCB East 2001's course offerings or registered
for the September 10-14 show, you can do so online at http://www.pcbeast.com.
This year's conference features over 40 courses--almost half of which are new to
PCB East--including courses on high-speed design, signal integrity, EMC, HDI and
microvia design, DFM, packaging, assembly and test, flex/rigid flex, RF and
microwave, laminates and stackups, place and route, footprint/library part
creation and much more.

We're also excited and pleased to announce that John A. McNeill, an associate
professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Worcester
Polytechnic Institute, will present this year's Keynote Address: "PCB Design in
the Gigahert Age." Below is an abstract for Dr. McNeill's Keynote Address, as
well as his bio.

PCB East 2001 Keynote Address: "PCB Design in the Gigahertz Age"
What are the state-of-the-art technology and perfomance trends affecting PCB
design today? And what are the implications for PCB design? In the Keynote
Address at PCB Design Conference East 2001, Dr. John McNeill, associate
professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Worcester
Polytechnic Institute, will detail some of the obvious and not-so-obvious
problems facing today's PCB engineers and designers--including transmission line
effects, power distribution, ever-increasing package size and jitter from
crosstalk. Find out why Dr. McNeill, a professor who has won numerous teaching
awards, thinks that universities should do a much better job educating engineers
on electromagnetcs, that companies should foster a culture where it's OK to say
"I don't know," and that engineers and designers can do more to help themselves
face and meet the challenges of PCB design in the gigahertz age.

Bio: John A. McNeill joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department
faculty of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA, in 1994. His research
interests are in the area of mixed signal integrated circuit design for
telecommunications applications at speeds of 2.5 Gbps and beyond. He has
authored numerous publications in IEEE and other journals, and holds multiple
patents. He was named Outstanding Professor in the ECE department in 1999 and
2000, and in 1999 McNeill received WPI's Outstanding Teaching Award. He received
the A.B. degree in 1983 from Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, the M.S. degree in
1991 from the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, and the Ph.D. degree in
1994 from Boston University, Boston, MA. Prior to joining the faculty of WPI,
McNeill worked in industry as a design engineer from 1983 to 1990 and continues
to consult in the areas of high-resolution analog-to-digital converters, and
high-speed, wide dynamic range imaging systems.

See you at the show!

Regards,
