I agree with Jon. I took in some Hakko 9-something series...kinda new a year or so ago, can't remember the exact model. Anyway, I got a tip thermometer and measured our trusty Metcals. Like Jon said, about a 80 degree window. Then I measured the Hakkos...about a 5-degree window. i was sold, just couldn't get approval to purchase 20 or so irons. Also, the Hakkos came with a copper material tip cleaner. Using a wet sponge to wipe off the tip came decrease your temps DRASTICALLY!!! If an operator wipes the tip and goes right back to soldering, you could be looking at a 100+ decrease in temp. Look at the Hakkos, they're worth it.

One big caution I would put forth on Metcal iron that I learned the hard way
(and waaay too late...) - the "temperature ranges" of Metcal tips are not as
accurate as you might initially think from reading their literature. As an
example, I found tips in the "600" family that are assumed to be around 620
degrees F that varied from 610 to 680 - all with the same part number
(configuration). Each individual tip held about +/- 2 degrees, but the
center point of that range from tip to tip was anywhere in that 70 degree
window. After talking to Metcal, that was considered acceptable to them.

 Right now we are using a metcal solder station.

 Looking through the catalog reveals that the soldering tips come in three
 temperature ranges;
 And various sizes. >>
