Using the spacers is nice, but we found that it increased our assembly time
too much. What we have done is either kink the leads or find a body
size/lead configuration that kept the meniscus out of the hole and all parts
at a uniform height. Another thing we did was to standardize our lead
spacing as much as possible so when Engineering changed a component value we
did not have to re-spin the bare board for a lead spacing issue.
Just one engineer's opinion.

Lou,
We use spacers all the time for our radial leaded parts. There is a
commericial specification (used to be a military one) numbered A-55485
available from any of the websites that offer copies of government specs
-(http://astimage.daps.dla.mil) is the one that I use. This spec is a
complete catalog of spacers and suppliers. The spacers that I use are nice
because they support my parts off the board without affecting topside solder
fillets. I like this better than the "kick" in the lead method as the the
"kick" method seems to elevate the parts higher than I like to see. I also
like the spacers better than the toothpick and wire support methods.
