Hi Rick,

This request for passivation of a pwb is a little strange to me...
Passivation is typically a process applied to stainless steel. I have not
seen anyone passivate the surface of copper. (not that it couldn't be
done...) If I remember correctly, passivation per Q-P-35 or Mil-S-5002 is an
etching process that removes foreign materials from the surface of the metal
and promotes the oxidation of the surface to create a barrier to corrosion.
Most of your commercial and military plating contractors can passivate. But
they may look at you funny if you are passivating copper. Not to mention the
trouble you will have with soldering to the board, trying to get through
that oxide barrier...could be tough for the flux... very unusual, I wonder
what the designer is trying to do? Tell me more...

Subject: [DC] Plating Type

I have a customer asking for "passivating" plating on their PCB's. Can
anyone tell me what this is and if any board houses can provide it.

Thank you
