I don't know how things are in UK, but here in the States, It is illegal to
discriminate because of someone's age.  I'm sure, some may not get hired
because of their age, but to specify an age limit will surely bring the
firm into a court room for discrimination lawsuit.

With that said, you are absolutely right that people should be judged on
their experience and knowledge and not on their age.
