I used the stickscrew at a previous employer, we used them to assemble a
sheet metal chassis. We asked them to paint our screws black to match
the metal. I though they worked very well. As Phil said, they are a
great labor savings in terms of labor.

StickScrew by PEM. I have a trial one on my desk, but I haven't
actually
tried it out, because a lot of screws in our chassis are seen from the
outside and the hex shape looked a little funky and I was worried the
breakoff point between the screws might not be always totally clean.

Michael,

Yes. We switched to RivScrews to mount our fans and fan grills to the
chassis to eliminate the hand work of inserting and tightening the
screw,
flat washer, lock washer and nut. They work well, but with a cautionary
note. Carefully size the fastener to the hole size. In the case of our
fans with plastic bodies we had cracking around the corner where the
RivScrew was inserted. Our solution to date is to switch to a plastic
snap-in fastener, in some applications, made by Fastex and Richco.

The RivScrews worked well and saved a huge amount of labor. One down
side
(for us) is the quantities that Avdel Cherry wants to sell the fasteners
in,
50K per order. This may be fine for your application, but with our
production level one order would have lasted us years. We were able to
get
around this by buying from a local distributor (Accurate Screw in
Boston).

I experimented with using the RivScrews for fastening TO-220 and TO-247
devices to heat sinks. My Engineering department never bought into the
process. However, I'm told this is "an industry standard".

We found that in some applications the Chobert fastener worked well or
better due to sizing. Please carefully size the mandrel to the
fastener.
We had an application were we used an oversized mandrel in a fastener
and
ultimately it ripped the fastener lengthwise as we were over stretching
[forming] the metal.

Tooling is a bit pricey, but if you are making bunches of chassis they
may
be cost effective.

There is another fastener called "Screw Stick" which may also work in
your
application. Unfortunately I've forgotten who makes them. Does anybody
else have experience with these?

Subject: [TN] RivScrew for Assembly

Has anyone use RivScrews for mounting boards to standoffs or power
supplies
into
a chassis?
We have a unit that requires over 200 screws to assemble. I would like
to
use
RivScrews to cut
down on the assembly time. Does anyone have experience replacing screws
to
build up a chassis
with RivScrews? Thank you.

Best Regards,

Mike Forrester
