If I could just throw in my two cents worth.....

The reason why the clove hitch works so well for tying off cables is that
this knot remains in place as you tighten it. That is, when you let go, the
tightness remains. But if you need to move it, it is very easy to loosen and
move. If you're using lacing cord impregnated with wax the clove hitch is
even more effective. I usually finish off the knot with a square knot over
the top. We not only burn the ends of the tape off with an iron, we also
gently touch the knot with the iron thus melting the wax and sealing the
whole works. This burning iron should be an iron separate from the iron used
for soldering.

Maybe I threw in more than two cents.
