Hi Steve,

<Generally, the reasons I've found come down to dollars, and core
compentcies.>

That´s the one thing, giving parts of the cake away to somebody who´s
capable to do the job in a more economic way.

<... a company may be very good in designing products, but lack the
facilities to produce the products they design efficiently.>

In my understanding "designing products very good" means that the design
takes manufacturability into account so you need a top designer who´s
keeping up with all sorts of things and/or a very very good TEAMWORK with
your CM. Good design needs good feedback.

Dealing with CM´s and design questions is a tough job and needs some
experts.
To look for quality over and over again is a must, regardless what is said
or written down unless you outsource the whole part after the designprocess
up to the fieldservice to the CM.
Again, looking for quality needs experts too ... and is a struggle ... and
time consuming ... and ... but it´s hard to figure out the $`s for that but
they have to be paid regardless if you pay for experts, loss in profit or
put your money in rework and reclamation processes.

Outsourcing AND giving the control away is IMO dangerous, you might pay for
something that is not under your influence anymore and that would make me
nervous.

To find the right "partner" sometimes needs some trials. To establish a good
relationship and a good efficient feedback path needs some time too.

Just talking about some of my experiences

Wolfgang
