There are different systems available on the market from the high end full 3D paste volume
measuring systems such as GSI Lumonics, down to the oblique laser systems available from
people like the Cyberoptics LSM systems.
To save money I found the best method was to attach a DTI (Dial Test Indicator)on to the
stationary part of a microscope which probed the focussing part. You then focus on the PCB
surface, zero the DTI, then focus on the upper surface of the solder paste. Read the DTI and
you have the paste height measurement. This method offered good repeatability when we
performed an R & R study on it.
