Scott,
I'm using a fixture that holds nine coupons that you would weigh (with a
scale accurate to .000 g) prior to fluxing. Send the fixture up the wave
solder machine - fluxer ON, preheat ON, solder OFF. Then weigh the nine
coupons again. The delta in weight would be how much flux your depositing.
The fixture /coupons will also tell you how evenly - side-to-side and
front-to-back - your spray fluxer is depositing flux. I've set up an SPC
chart using this tool and use it after preventative maintenance is done on
the spray nozzles.
I did have an alarm on the wave solder machine telling me I had low flow in
the nozzle. By the naked eye, I couldn't tell (the pcb's still had descent
hole fill), but the flux fixture when I was originally evaluating it, saw
the drop off in deposition, which was reflected as out-of-control points on
my SPC chart.
For info on the fixture, call Vitronics-Soltec at 603-772-7778.
Also, ECD makes the Fluxometer, similar, but better than the fax-paper
test. However, the readings are subjective (vs. the quantitative readings
used with the flux fixture).
Good luck,

Subject: [TN] Flux Deposition
Good Afternoon,
I am wondering what approaches are available for measuring the amount of
flux applied to the bottom side of a circuit card using a spray fluxer...or
for that matter any type of flux application method.
Thanks in advance,
