Rich,

I seen the same demo by 3M. They make a anti-static Kapton Tape (#42) that
generates virtually no charge on either the peel-off from the roll, or the
peel-off from the board. The tape is about (?) 50% in cost however, but
this may be peanuts compared to the cost of ESD failures.

The advantage of the #42 tape over the ionizer blowers is that the tape is
fool-proof. With the blower, the tape has to be put on and pulled off in
front of the blower (hopefully working properly). If the tech from test
borrows a roll of tape to hold down a jumper wire (and you know he will),
he won't be in front of an ionizer. Again, with the #42 tape, who cares.

Also, data I've seen show that the #42 tape leaves equal or less residue on
the board than its non-conductive counterpart.

Other alternatives: titanium stiffeners; G10 goldfinger protectors
(Stevens Products in New Jersey in almost any size); or wave solder
fixtures to mask the goldfingers.

Good luck with your choice,

Subject: [TN] Kapton Tape and ESD Concerns

Good afternoon everyone,

We did an evaluation of Kapton tape and ESD concerns and found that by
pulling the tape off of the reel we were able to generate over 1100 volts
(as measured by the 3M 711 Charge Analyzer. Does anyone else have any
experience with Kapton tape and ESD concerns? What are the alternatives?
Any historical problems with Kapton and ESD? We typically use the Kapton
for masking gold fingers.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Rich Lasko
