I would go find out why the nickel is propsed to be eliminated. You may find that there is a problem with the plating of the nickel with the supplier and it was someones bright idea to just eliminate the nickel ( no problem anymore) without completely thinking through what the ramifications will be further into the process.
I feel that the nickel plating is one of the preferred methods for a flex to connect to the stainless part.
