Hi Phil,

My last gig did the same thing, folks would check out hazardous stuff (flux,
alcohol, etc.) at the shift's beginning and return unused portion in the
shift's end. One catch, we had to make sure there was no hoarding of
supplies just-in-case . . . .

Hans

Steve,

This is why I was so anal about our change over from RA to OA. I cleaned
out the entire factory of the old rosin material and then monitored where it
might have to be returned, but there had to be a good reason. For example,
in our system we use a lot of Litz wire for making coils and transformers.
These wires are tinned in a solder pot. It seems that after several day of
soldering there was enough stuff in the solder pot that with a new wire
being introduced with the OA flux there would be a small fire on the surface
of the solder pot. This is where we put the RA back into service. On other
area was on some of our older boards we used a high temp solder (5Sn95Pb)
that was RA core. To get it in OA core I'm looking at $137 per roll with a
5 pound minimum. So for now we "sign out" the old RA high temp solder, flux
and alcohol which must be returned after each use. (Boy, I'm a hard-ass!)

Subject: [TN] Flux dye...

Hi ya'll!

We use three different flux types in our processes here. No-clean (for hand
soldering items that can't be cleaned...unsealed switches, etc.) RMA
(because
some of our customers require it), and OA (for everything else...).

We seem to occasionally have a problem with our operators picking up the
wrong bottle of flux thinking it is no-clean, but it is OA...and yes, the
bottles are labeled, but it still happens...

Is there some sort of dye that could be put into the flux that wouldn't hurt
the chemistry of the flux, would wash off completely, and not turn other
things colored? I'm thinking that if there's a really different color to OA
flux, it would lessen the chance picking-up the wrong bottle, and you can
easily tell when OA's haven't been cleaned from the board.

Just trying to make things "monkey-proof" if ya' know what I mean...hehehe.
