Barbara,
As long as the text is legible and in a visible location, anywhere is fine,
but located with the vendor name and part number gives a touch of class
(which all of us PCB/PWB designers naturally have, right?).  I'm not sure
if the periods are important, I've seen it both ways.
IMHO.
