The five S's come from the Japanese way of manufacturing:

1)  S = SEIRI; Segregate and discard
2)  S = SEITON; Arrange and Identify
3)  S = SEISO; Clean Daily
4)  S = SEIKETSU; Revisit Frequently
5)  S = SHITSUKE; Motivate to Sustain

In other words (from a checklist that we use at our plant)

-  Sort (Organization, Distinguish between what is needed and not needed)
-  Set in Order (Orderliness, A place for everything and everything in its
place)
-  Shine (Cleanliness, cleaning, and looking for ways to keep it clean and
organized)
-  Standardize (Adherence, maintain and monitor the first three categories)
-  Sustain (Self-discipline, Stick to the rules)
