10K for a four layer board seems a little high, but not excessive. There are
a lot of variable to be considered:

1) Does the house stock R4000 or is it special order? Special order adds
cost. Additional production line time if the are changing press profiles for
you 1 board.
2) Are you using standard cores or do you require special run material?
Special order adds cost.
3) What is the technology used? 5/5, 4/4, 3/3 trace and space? Smaller
geometries cost extra.
4) What tolerances are you requiring? Tighter tolerances add cost.
5) While R4000 is a "low cost" microwave material but what you need to
remember is most of the Teflon products are in the $20-100 per square foot
range so $10-19 is low cost.

Subject: [TN] Rogers material v/s Lot charge of $10K, ouch!!!

Guys,
We had a four-layer board requiring Rogers's material (R4003) on our
prototype fab. We needed about 10 boards (very small size @1"x2") but
instead we have to pay $10,000 as a lot charge. To me this is very very high
$ number so instead of getting 10 boards we ended up having 500 cards.

My question to all of you is that is it common to charge a lot for Rogers's
material or is our beloved PCB supplier gouging me.

ken patel
