All,

Motorola have set up an initiative for the recycling of mobile phones within
the UK, current capacity I believe is 750,000 phones per year. Anyone
wishing to get further information, in preparation for take back, may look
to contacting their local Motorola press office.

In the interim I will try to get some statistics on what percentage of
specific materials are being recycled.

Regards,
Martin.

A low lead level in tin (a good thing) unfortunately conflicts with
increased recycling of tin (another good thing).

Unfortunately life is all about compromises. It is technically difficult
(i.e. costly) to separate tin fom lead. Many tin deposits contain
significant lead so that even sets a baseline on "new" tin.

I am hearing that by 2005 in Europe there are targets for recycled content
in electronics - I have heard values as high as 65%. OK if you're making
rack mounted devices (much steel is recycled), tough if you're making cell
phones as 70% of circuit boards (thermoset and glass) can't be recycled in
to the product. Solder (7-8% by weight) can be recycled and the tin
separated from the lead but I understand it's not economic if you have to
take the lead down to 0.1%. There will be considerable lead in the recycle
circuit for at least the next 10-15 years.

We need to be working towards recycling these materials rather than
creating a better grade of landfill! I learned yesterday that takeback
regulations start in Sweden - this year. Now we're setting up collection
mechanisms, it starts to make more sense to set up a corresponding recycle
mechanism.

Kay Nimmo has stated her preference for 0.1 percent lead impurity over 0.2
percent in "lead-free" solders. What is the preference based on? Why not
0.01 percent? Why not "none detectable"? How is the decision to be made?
Who
gets to make it? Without the answer to the last two questions, what's the
point of picking a value?
