As I recall, after WW2 when Japanese industry was known for cheap knock-off
copies of American products, There was a manufacturing city in Japan that
was named "USA".  Hence, MADE IN USA was an attempt to deceive the consuming
public.  As kids we were taught to look for the periods to distinguish
U.S.A. from USA.
