Michael,
Try Pheonix, Weinschel or Rosenberger. They do blind mate connectors that can
be board mounted.
Avoids the loss of coaxial cables. But beware, some are not compatible with SM
process temps.

What is the distance between the boards, i.e. how tall should the connector
be?

If this distance is greater than one inch, you will probably need the coax
cables...
