Lou, you are right, there is not one temperature for all connections.
Temperature depends on the mass and configuration of the connection.
Connections with similar mass and configuration can usually be soldered with
irons of one tip size and temperature. IMHO Tip Size, Temperature,
Configuration (materials etc.), and Dwell Time are all significant players
in the hand soldering game. Operators need to be taught how to adjust tip
size, temperature, and dwell time for the type of connection that they are
soldering. Under-heating is as significant as over-heating. That is why
solder operators need to have that sixth sense that many of us old timers
allude to. Good hand solderers you just don't pick off of the tree ---- you
train them and train them until they get it right!

Subject: [TN] Soldering iron temperature

TechNetters, believing that the only dumb question is the one you don't ask,
let me inquire - How do you choose temperature for a hand soldering iron?
(I'm not referring to the Metcal ones with those special tips.)

I am working with our production people to prepare work instructions. For
hand soldering, some people say 700 F, some 750 F. My suspicion is there
may not be one temperature to use all the time. Any comments would be much
appreciated.
