HNY to you, too. The classic one from the wartime era, when there were
lots of foreign soldiers in the UK was that one of them was sitting by
the window in a train. To prevent injury by flying glass, in the case of
a bomb blast or similar, the windows were covered by a thick fabric
netting stuck onto them, making them almost opaque. The distinctive
noise of a V1 (doodle-bug) flying bomb was heard and then the motor cut,
sign that it would then drop like a brick. A fellow passenger cried,
"Look out!", whereupon the soldier opened the window and stuck his head
and shoulders out to see what was going on, just as the train entered a
tunnel. Splatch...! Supposedly authentic story, but VERY unconfirmed!
