Let me be the first to validate your suspicion. One tip temperature will now
work for all hand soldering applications. Temperatures vary depending on a
number of process variables: type of soldering equipment, type of solder,
type of flux, type of components.

In the end you need to achieve a good solder fillet in 2 to 5 seconds.
Things to consider; relative thermal mass of the tip to workpiece, shape of
the tip and the workpiece, creation of a thermal bridge.

We teach hand soldering with many types and brands of equipment using
temperature settings from 600°F to 900°F. Feel free to call me and discuss
your application.

Subject: [TN] Soldering iron temperature

TechNetters, believing that the only dumb question is the one you don't ask,
let me inquire - How do you choose temperature for a hand soldering iron?
(I'm not referring to the Metcal ones with those special tips.)

I am working with our production people to prepare work instructions. For
hand soldering, some people say 700 F, some 750 F. My suspicion is there
may not be one temperature to use all the time. Any comments would be much
appreciated.
