Wherever possible try to locate connectors, switches, trimmers and other
such devices that should NOT be coated, onto one side of the assembly. In
this way they can be dip coated without any masking making this an
inexpensive operation - oh no, not costs again?

In all other coating application methods some form of masking will be
required which is time consuming and very expensive. Remember that masking
time is for the masking material, masking time AND demasking and re-work
time. This is what makes the exercise as expensive as Brian indicated.
Selective coating methods minimise masking but the capital cost is high when
compared to a dip coater and not able to handle high volumes as easily.

One other suggestion is to select connectors that will lend themselves to
easy masking. Cannot name names, but consider that coatings should be under
as well as over components, so they are designed to get into your awkward
little places!

Subject: [TN] Conformal Coating - Design Guidelines?

Are there any design guidelines for PCB designers, to help design a board
that is suitable for
use within a conformal coating machine?

Matthew Lamkin.
