Hello,
I wonder whether somebody can help my clarifying which classes to use when testing
according 830A.
In section 3.7.1. Moisture and Insulation Resistance it is stated that coating materials shall be tested in accordance with IPC-TM-650, 2.6.3.1 class H.
Subsequently it is said that for class 3, 25 to 65 C, 90-98% RH, 50 VDC bias, 160 hours cycling conditions should be applied (which is the same thing mentioned in 2.6.3.1 revision C (1 month more recent than 830A and in the subject line referring to both
soldermasks and conformal coatings)). A bit further it is mentioned that differentation of the class requirements shall be required.
Does this mean that for a class 2 product, class 3 (H) conditions must be imposed (with a differentation towards the end results as e.g. 100 megohms instead of 500 megohms for the insulation resistance) ? Or are the conditions imposed in IPC-TM-650
sufficient ?
Similarly, for section 3.7.3. Temperature and Humidity Aging (Hydrolytic Stability), does one have to stick to the 120 days test mentioned in IPC-830A (which seems pretty long) or are 7 days sufficient as stated in IPC-TM-2.6.11 revision B (originating
from the conformal coating task group and having specifics for conformal coatings) for class 2 products.
Any help would be much appreciated
Inge
