Attn: Guy Ramsey & Bill Kasprzak re terminal mounting.
- On single sided or double sided boards it is OK to mount terminals in
plated through holes. When mounted in plated through holes on double sided
boards the terminals must be soldered to both top and bottom side
terminations to assure electrical connection since staking the terminals may
damage to PTH knee and create an open circuit. You may want to use step
soldering when mounting the terminals if they will later have wires/component
leads that need to be soldered & desoldered repetitively (step soldering
means soldering the terminal to the pwb with a high temp solder [Sn5, Sn10,
etc.] so that later soldering operations [performed with Sn63] do not reflow
the connections holding the terminal to the pwb).
- If mounted to a single sided board with no trace/termination area on the
bottom of the board, the terminal should be mounted with a roll flange (on
the bottom of the board), see criteria in J-STD-001.
- On multilayer boards it is only OK to mount terminals in plated through
holes if there are two plated through holes in parallel. Mounting a terminal
in a PTH has a high probability of damaging the PTH and resulting in an open
circuit between the top, bottom and interlayer connections, in order to
assure electrical integrity it is best to have parallel pth's (the hole not
having a terminal can have a component lead installed).
- Correct pwb design accommodates terminal installation by providing pth's in
parallel (need not be co-located, but must be electrically common from top to
bottom and all interlayers).
Hope the above helps. Regards, Jim Moffitt, Technical Director, Electronics
Training Advantage, Indianapolis IN
