Bill, IMHO there is only one really reliable terminal/PCB interface method.
It is shown in figure
6-5C, page 7, of J-STD-001B. The beauty of this type of configuration is
that you can solder the wires to the terminal and the terminal to the
circuit trace in one operation. In addition there is no step soldering
required or undesirable remelting of the soldered connection between the
terminal and the trace when the wires are soldered in place. We have
successfully used this configuration in all of our space flight hardware for
the last 20 years or more. It works on single or double sided or
multilayers. Try it, you'll like it!

Subject: [TN] Mounting turret terminals on circuit boards

Good Morning:

I am curious to know if there is a "right" way for the following:

Standard .062 thick, two sided board where turret terminals are mounted. The
boards are being soldered to NASA-STD-8739.3.

The active circuitry is on one side of the board. (on the side that the
terminal is swaged).

For the turret terminal locations only....

Does the "correct" board design call for a pad on one side of the board
without a plated thru hole and no topside pad?

Or.... Can you have a standard plated thru hole when mounting terminals?

Any and all responses appreciated !
