Bill,

We don't build NASA spec boards (although you'd think so with some of the
gigs from inspection)but we swage turrets and threaded standoffs in many of
our boards. The turrets are always in plated through holes with pads top
and bottom using a roll form die set and usually only soldered by wave
solder. Most of the threaded spacers are also in plated through holes with
solder top and bottom, just for overkill. The spacers are also swaged with
roll form die sets. The turrets are usually E0 or ground on the board. The
spacers often mount one board to another and often at least one is used for
electrical contact between boards.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [TN] Mounting turret terminals on circuit boards

Good Morning:

I am curious to know if there is a "right" way for the following:

Standard .062 thick, two sided board where turret terminals are mounted. The
boards are being soldered to NASA-STD-8739.3.

The active circuitry is on one side of the board. (on the side that the
terminal is swaged).

For the turret terminal locations only....

Does the "correct" board design call for a pad on one side of the board
without a plated thru hole and no topside pad?

Or.... Can you have a standard plated thru hole when mounting terminals?

Any and all responses appreciated !
