Is it possible that the boards are supplied to you with an excessively
thick coating of the OSP? Since an OSP is basically an azole, chemistry
differences including type of azole, pH control, etc. leads to thicker than
normal coatings. It is possible that the residues are azole type materials.
Alcohol swabbing should remove the material if it is organic in nature.

After each cycle. The residue manifests only after the wave solder cycle.
It did come off with swabs and Microcare - but we don't want to make a habit
of it - we're talking hundreds of boards. The Product Assurance Lab ruled
out ionic contamination, but why only on the OSP boards? We run HASL and
NiAu through the same processes with no residues.
It must be a reaction of the chemistries with the OSP I would think.
