Hi Kim!

You see a lot of that stuff too, huh? I see it all the time...we're a
contract assembly company, so we just do what the customer tells us to do.

We try to suggest things to our customers to try and keep from having to do
"kluges", but it doesn't work a lot of the time.

You want to see a good (bad) "kluge"? Go to:

http://www.driveway.com/share?sid=e25a88c4.8e904&name=Pictures

and look at kluge.jpg. This is on a board that is in production which we'll
be building 600 of them over the next year...not a big volume, but this is
what the customer wants and this is what we'll do. There are about 6 to 8
other places on the board that have similar kluges (although not as fun!) as
what you see in the picture. We see stuff like this more times than I care
to...

As to any standards for this kind of stuff, there aren't any that I know of.
I believe it's all based on how much risk you care to take by deviating from
accepted industry norm...

Don't think there will be anything formal that will say there's a standard to
go by in which it's okay to deviate from best manufacturing and design
practices.

In some cases, because of the costs involved, you calculate your risks and do
what you have to do...
