Ed,

If I'm not mistaken, the 5mm from front edge and side did originate with
SMEMA. Not sure if it's a standard or just a recommendation.

Subject: [TN] front tooling hole standard--need an answer fast!!!

Help everyone!!!! This is a basic question, but I can't seem to find the
paperwork to back this up. In the past, every PCB that I have ever dealt
with has had the lead tooling hole centered at 5mm from the front edge and
5mm from the side and this has worked with all machines that required
tooling pins. Is this an IPC or a SMEMA standard and/or where is this
documented. We have just been told that a piece of equipment that we are
thinking of purchasing requires the tooling hole a minimum of 5.5mm from
the edge. This would obviously goof up things with existing machines since
the tooling hole location is different.

Hope this makes sense, feel free to call if you have questions.
