Remi,
You may want to talk to a company called Chomerics. I do not have their
address, etc. here. You are justified in your wariness of tapes, though.
But it is not necessarily the tape's fault. Check the planarity of the heat
sink and the component. The results may shock you.

regards,
Bev Christian

Subject: [TN] SMT heat sink attachment

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for a way to attach a heat sink to a BGA (45mm) without
adhesives, and without clipping directly onto the component, or a
socket. Has anyone seen some type of hook that can be placed onto the
board during surface mount, which could have a clip attach onto it?

If anyone knows of another type of mechanical attachment method that
does not require holes drilled in the board, a socket, or clipping onto
a component, I would like to hear about it.

We are reluctant to try adhesive tapes, since they are known to have bad
contact area. If someone knows of a double sided tape that has good
thermal properties, and forms good contact area, I would also like to
hear about it.

Thanks in advance for your time,

Remi
