Yes, Very common,
Check with any of the heatsink vendors; IERC, Mallory, Thermalloy...

Some observations, many of the clips that snap into holes in the pwb are
very difficult to assemble manually, I have assembled heatsink/fans that
clamp around the edges of ceramic bgas and found these components are very
fragile, the favorite style clamp in this shop is the hooks soldered to the
board and a spring wire over the heatsink.

Subject: [TN] SMT heat sink attachment

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for a way to attach a heat sink to a BGA (45mm) without
adhesives, and without clipping directly onto the component, or a
socket. Has anyone seen some type of hook that can be placed onto the
board during surface mount, which could have a clip attach onto it?

If anyone knows of another type of mechanical attachment method that
does not require holes drilled in the board, a socket, or clipping onto
a component, I would like to hear about it.

We are reluctant to try adhesive tapes, since they are known to have bad
contact area. If someone knows of a double sided tape that has good
thermal properties, and forms good contact area, I would also like to
hear about it.

Thanks in advance for your time,

Remi
