IPC techie,

356A allows for signifcantly more board information, such as buried resistors, trace data, etc. In our facility, 356A is the input format for our grid and flying probe testers and the embedded trace data allows for graphical respresentation during test fault verification.

The best place to perform your CAD to Gerber compares is at incoming.... pre-cam. Most cam systems can perform this function. You will be surprised how many new designs have discrepancies between their CAD outputs and the RS-274X. Real issues and a high percentage of fatal errors. Very interesting. Performing the CAD to Gerber compares as the very first process step saves everyone a lot of grief. Electrical test data should be generated from the original IPC -356 file to complete the data integrity loop.

For those of you who use IPC-D-356x format netlist in your board testers, I have two types of questions I am having trouble understanding:

Does anyone know if there is a difference in the quality of the data between IPC-D-356 and IPC-D-356A versions? Does the newer versions give any MORE data? IS a netlist a netlist or is there more to the story?

And when you load the IPC netlist into the tester you are testing the gerber-data-generated-board against the PCB-database-generated-netlist data. Since this happens at the back end, are you also comparing the IPC netlist to a gerber extracted netlist at the front end CAM? Are there potential problems with this comparison?

Jack (who still seems like the new guy)
