The only thing comes to mind if you are to conformal coat the board then you
might have to put sleeving over the diode. This is to protect it from
mechanical stress as the conformal coating cures because the board and glass
diode are expanding at different rates. There has been experience with
diodes cracking. I think even after the cure this can be a problem with the
environment the assembly will experience. I have always wonder if any
problem can occur from bonding diodes to the board on the bottom of boards
and running them through the wave. I think there is something in the
Handbook for J-Std-001 about this. Jon

Subject: [TN] Glass component on trace

I have a pwb that does not have solder mask on it. We are mounting a glass
diode with the body directly on top of a .065 trace. The drawing does not
call out for sleeving and there is nothing in IPC-610 which addresses this.
It just doesn't feel right to me....flashbacks of WS 6536 perhaps. Should
this be of any concern????
