Agree,
1
should be patented, this should extend life of the joints tremendously,
especially with the upper bubbles locations.
2
it's unlikely steam, moisture is usually more volatile and blows,
i'd say Ryan and Hans are closer to it,
it's a "slow" reaction, would bet on the paste too.
3
Apart from the puzzle, little to worry about .
Perhaps lift the temps 5-10'C, go slower, ?

Hi Franklin,

I have question.

Could the bubbles have been caused by volatiles in the flux not being
completely driven off? I remember reading something about this recently
either in Coombs or an old Machine Soldering Workshop.

Hans

Subject: [TN] Bubbles in through holes

Help...

A customer has brought a problem to our attention. The yare experiencing
'air bubbles' in through holes after wave soldering.

The copper plating in the hole is averaging 1.25 mils, we have not seen
any compromised hole walls, only bubbles, they even extend up and out of
the hole next to the component leads.

I have uploaded pictures on our website, any assistance would be
appreciated.

These boards were fabricated here in Texas 13 months ago, the customer
did not bake the boards prior to processing. Thanks
