Hi Gang,

This will be a quick cuz Hansie has been working the solder machine for the
past two days. I'm making progress, posted some pictures yesterday with
more to come at
http://www.driveway.com/share?sid=a8f3cb1d.96df8&name=Pictures (same link
as last time). I'd much rather be a cyber junkie than a grease monkie.

I've melted the solder twice since I first cleaned the oil off and found
tons of solder ball-oily sludge. The first time got a decent amount of oil
to rise to the top - cleaned that off. This last time I went poking around
with a titanium rake and brought a HUGE amount of gunk to the surface. All
the solder pot walls were covered with this gray dull metallic stuff which
floats on melted solder. Must have been half an inch at least.

I would love to ditch this machine and get a new one. But there is a reason
we kept this one around for so long. I'm not sure what it is but there has
to be a reason. (Perhaps nobody around to do the paperwork.) But then I
want an Etec Direct Laser Imager too.

I'm hoping to get the machine partially working - We've got a growing
bottleneck with the wave being down. We won't be able to take this one
apart until I come with some alternative.

We use Kester Solder Analysis C which checks the levels for tin, antimony,
copper, gold, cadmium, aluminum, zinc, iron, arsenic, bismuth, silver, and
nickel.

Thanks for the assist guys and gals. Keep ya posted because I'm still
following my nose on this one.

Hans

Added notes. If you do decided to empty the pot and thoroughly clean the
pot and the elements as one mentioned, the walls of the pot is where the
contaminants (gold, etc) collect over the years and from what I have been
told is worth $ in recycling. Might ask some companies who reclaim solder.
Has anyone else knows or have heard about this? I had the pleasure of
working for an individual who been in the industry a very long time
including the early beginnings of NASA and now consults with companies all
over the world. He said we have forgotten what the walls of the pot really
look like when they are cleaned (scrapped). I thought I would just mention
this so as not to be forgotten. Also if a new machine is in the future,
make sure planning is done for no lead solder which is probably going to
affect solder temperatures from what little I have learned so far. Again my
2 cents worth. Jon

Subject: [TN] Wave Flow Solder Problem

Hi Everybody,

I've been asked to troubleshoot a BIG problem with our wave flow soldering
machine and I could use some advice. I'm in the beginning stages of
learning about wave flow soldering.

We use Tin Lead 63/37 solder with Kester-5738 Dross Inhibiting Oil and, to
date, my solder analysis has come back fine.
And recently, we've been getting alot of bridging on assemblies (multilayer
FR-4). No surprise really, there is an embarrassing amount of scum
(dross-?) and our Tinning oil is gunking up. We've only used this oil for a
few months so it's the only reported process change. The joints look It's
an old Hollis machine (bought in '83) that has seen better days. The first
thing management said was, "Should we go and buy a new machine?" Showed
Kester the pics and they said the oil was at the end of its life and broke
down.

I threw a couple of pictures on my public drive starting with the word
'Solder -'. I kept them fairly large (~500 k each) so people can get a good
idea of what I'm up against. For the digital buffs, they're scaled down 60%
from the originals using a Sony DSC-D700 camera.

Thoughts, questions, suggestions, . . . . prayers?

Do we just need to scoop the gunk out (that was my weekend) and keep going?
Start over with a fresh bath of solder?

The more I do, the more I learn . . . the hard way.

Hans
