I am not as versed as others on alloys, etc., however, like hand soldering
the tin can be burned up by heat.  I would venture to say that heat may very
well be the answer.  Werner, Dave Hillman, and you guys help me out here.  I
would say that if you are taking solder samples and having them analyzed
that you can calculate your tin depletion rate.  This depletion rate may be
affected by how much solder you need to add each day as to how much tin you
are actually depleting out of your pot.  I think most of the solder
manufacturers have analysis labs that can analyze your samples.  I believe
that there is also a table available in the IPC Standards, like MIL-Std 2000
document, that will inform you of acceptable tin depletion level.
