Good morning Mel,
Our facility uses hundreds of flex tapes each week. Some CCAs employ
several different size flex tapes per unit.
I haven't heard of any concern from our Failure Analysis person regarding
suspect ESD damage.
However, our facility is very ESD conscious with mandatory heel straps, ESD
flooring, equipment grounding, continuous monitoring on all work benches,
fully snapped smocks, etc. so it may be difficult for an ESD charge to build
up and remain on the surface of the flex tape insulation. I believe there
is a very slim chance of a high potential charge from building up and
rapidly discharging thru our product.
Hope this helps.
Pete

Subject: [TN] Flex ESD Concern

How many assemblers treat flex cable (no components) with ESD
considerations to prevent charge generation and therefore reducing potential
for assembly damage to ESDS components? I have run across only one but
wonder if their concerns are truly founded. Could this be common practice?
