Ketan ,
with only a few of PTH's yo' right, saves time, as long as you have decent
welders.
I would not solder upside > solder runs down the component too readily ,
flooding/swelling the legs, it's a mess .
Solder from PTH components side , with legs properly trimmed ,
than you have no problems , good heat approach, full barrel.
Needless to say a tear of solder on iron will get you there faster,
operators have a bad habit of keeping tip dead/"clean"/dry/cold,
by ever so diligent wipes !
Feed wire between leg and tip poked to hole,
some of the handsoldering seen would give Jim fits,
never just assume it's simple enough > it ain't .

Desire of add flux abolishment is indeed commendable .

ave a goood wknd pk

Subject: [TN] Manual soldering of PTH joint from component side.

Hi TechNetters !!

I am facing a typical problem. Our boards have 80~90 smt components on them
and all are on one side. Balance of PTH components are on both the sides so
after reflow, we use manual soldering. I am looking forward to do manual
component insertion and soldering from component side to save time. My
question is - Is it the right way to solder the component from comp side?
How do we ensure proper filling of PTH and proper joint at solder side? We
are using no-cleaned cored solder wire from Kester. Presently we are using
additional flux but I want to eliminate it.

Looking forward to your answer. Thank you in anticipation.

Bye,

Ketan Bhatt
